Don’t Go On a Summer Vacation
Without One of These Gadgets

Summer is officially here and whether you’re taking the family on a trip or staying home we’ve assembled some fun and useful gadgets to make your summer even more “gadgetastic.
Avoid Overexposure ($17.75)
It looks like this personal UV monitor from Oregon Scientific might be on its way out but it’s still available through Amazon for under $20. The device measures UV intensity, keeps track of your exposure to the sun and tells you when it’s time to head for the shade. If this one is sold out there are other similar devices and we've even seen iPhone apps like Sun Alert ($1.99) that will time your exposure to the sun.
.
Find Yourself Outdoors
The Garmin Edge 305 GPS for cycling comes with a heart monitor strap and cadence counter and costs around $380. It tracks how far you've pedaled and even measures climbs and descents. You dump the data from the whole recording into your computer for a report on your ride. The Edge 605 and 705 are newer and more expensive models. The Garmin Rino 110 for hiking is waterproof and includes an FRS/GMRS two-way radio with a 2 -5 mile range. It costs around $150. Some higher-end Rinos offer more power and color displays. The Garmin Approach G3 GPS for golfing comes preloaded with maps for 12,000 golf courses. It can tell you the distance to the next hole and more for about $350.
A Waterlogged Gadget Could Ruin Your Vacation
These somewhat unusual looking devices have clear plastic areas for taking photos underwater or in the rain. ThinkGeek has a nice selection of cases that run around $30. AquaPac makes a whole assortment of them for all kinds of gadgets including this camera case and iPhone case. They even make one for SLR cameras.
Take Pictures and Videos Underwater
Kodak makes this fun point and shoot camera called the Playsport that is good down to about 10 feet under water. It’s a 5 megapixel camera with a 2-inch display; it can also take HD videos that can be played back from its HDMI port. It costs around $150. If you don’t want to carry a camera with you when you take the plunge, you can always pick up these goggles for around $100 that have a built-in camera for shooting stills or videos.
Don’t Drink the Water Unless…
You never know what’s in the water these days but especially for camping or hiking trips you can’t beat a handy UV pen sterilizer like this SteriPEN Adventurer from REI that claims to get rid of 99.99% of harmful micro-organisms in water. They only take a minute or two to clean the water and cost around $100.
Universal Gadget Power
Instead of taking a bag full of adaptors next time you travel overseas why not take one of these handy, multi-plug adaptors that work in most countries of the world. The Mujiadaptor, on the left, is available from their site for about $25. REI sells a similar device for around $25. Hammacher Schlemmer sells one for $39.95 that adds a USB port which could come in handy.
Carry an HD Camcorder in Your Pocket
We’re big fans of Flip video cameras; they fit in your pocket, take high quality videos and make it very easy to move the videos onto your computer and up to YouTube. Their latest video camera called the FlipSlide HD costs around $280 and has a nice big screen for viewing videos right on the camera. There are also other good pocket HD video cameras like the Kodak Zi8 (around $160) or Sony Bloggie (around $150).
Share Your Tunes With Your Friends
Speakers for your iPod or iPhone make a great addition to a camping trip, picnic, or even a hotel room. There are a lot of them to choose from. You can buy a speaker dock that can charge your device while it plays like this Altec Lansing inMotion speaker dock which costs about $100 and can run off its rechargeable battery or AC power. If you don’t want to carry a speaker dock along with you there are some good quality smaller speakers like the X-Mini II Capsule Speaker which go for around $28.
Go Green With Low Carbon Chargers
Why not go green this summer and use a sustainable energy source to power your gadgets. The Yogen charger works like a yoyo. You pull the string, the wheels turn, and whatever is plugged into the USB port gets a charge. They cost around $50 from the Yogen Store. The Freeloader portable solar charger folds up into a compact carrying case when not in use. It includes a 1,000 mAH battery which you can use as a battery pack to power other devices. It costs around $50 from Amazon.

Free Loader - Portable Solar Charger

I wonder why you would recommend this product (on Amazon) when it gets bad reviews (2 out of 5 stars, 2 reviews)?

Is there a better alternative (solar chargers)?
