News from SID and More
The Society for Information Display (SID) conference is taking place this week in Los Angeles. This is the show where display makers show off their latest technology. This year we’ve seen a Pixel War developing among LCD makers like Toshiba, Samsung and LG. This week we share what we’ve learned from the big display conference along with some new rumors about the iPhone 5G that is probably not even going to be called that.
Resolutions Moving Higher
Toshiba showed new LCDs for smartphones one of which squeezes 367ppi onto a 4-inch screen with 720 x 1280 resolution. Apple’s Retina display is spec’ed at 326ppi. Meanwhile Samsung says they have a display for tablets that offers 300ppi and a 2560 x 1600 resolution in a 10.1-inch display. The iPad 2 has a measly 132ppi by comparison. Samsung claims this new display also has a wider color gamut or range than other LCD screens which results in more realistic colors. Could this be the Retina display for the iPad 3? Samsung’s display uses PenTile technology that has been criticized in the past for producing fuzzy pixels. LG has a 3.5-inch panel that uses their In Plane Switching (IPS) technology to produce 960 x 640 resolution at 326 ppi.
Quantum Dots Emerging in New Displays
Look out OLEDs, QLEDs are about to arrive on the display scene. Quantum dots are nanocrystals that depending on their size and shape emit different frequencies or colors of light when excited. Among a large potential array of applications, they are being developed to work with LEDs to create a “whiter” LED and an emissive display like an OLED. They create extremely accurate colors and use very little power. At SID this year a company named QD Vision announced they were getting closer to producing a quantum dot LED called a QLED that could rival OLEDs in their rich colors and low power.
More Cool Stuff From SID
Toshiba will talk about some interesting technology they have been developing including a flexible OLED display, a new head’s-up display that could end up on automobile windshields, and other advances in backlighting and 3D technologies
There’s a New
iPhone Coming!
News of the forthcoming iPhone supposedly leaked out of China indicating it may have an edge-to-edge screen and a slightly repositioned camera flash. The reports come from a Chinese case manufacturer Kulcase’s Alibaba.com that shows a picture of their new case in a different looking iPhone. Word on the street is the new iPhone will appear in September and will be called the iPhone 4S.
A New Touch Screen Technology
At the recent ACM Conference on Human Factors in Vancouver a display called the T-PaD for tactile pattern display, that came out of Northwestern University uses high-frequency vibrations that creates a layer of air under your finger. When the air is there your finger slides when it’s not your finger feels stickier. Turning the vibrations on and off creates the sensation of a virtual button.
New Human Body 3D Visualizer
Healthline Networks has developed a very cool 3D interactive way of looking at the human body. It’s called BodyMaps and is free to use and can be found here.
