World traveler and tireless technology news hound, Robert Scoble reports from Nokia Day in Barcelona, Spain that the new Nokia 97 might be a potential rival to the iPhone. At least the N97 rises to the bar that Apple raised for smart phones. Robert reports that the N97 beats the iPhone with:

  • 16:9 video (iPhone doesn't do video at all)
  • 5 megapixel camera to iPhone's 2 megapixels
  • QWERTY keyboard as well as touchpad gesture-savvy screen
  • Copy and paste (Apple!!??)
  • Replaceable battery
  • Turn-by-turn GPS
  • With Apple just announcing that there are now more than 10,000 iPhone apps will Nokia and Symbian developers match the quantity and quality of apps? As they say, "software sells hardware." The N97 is due out in 2009.

"With Apple just announcing

"With Apple just announcing that there are now more than 10,000 iPhone apps will Nokia and Symbian developers match the quantity and quality of apps..."

I'm not sure there's a compelling reason for anyone to have access to 10,000 different applications. While there is certainly demand for different applications for various industry and consumer segments, it seems that 10,000 applications may be approaching the point of overkill.

"The N97 is due out in 2009."

In 2009, it's highly likely that Apple will release a new version of the iPhone which may match or exceed the N97's announced specifications.

The NOM television ads

The NOM television ads feature actors, not real people, claiming that same-sex marriage unfairly imposes contrary values on people of faith. The audition tapes feature ridiculous lines like “the clouds are dark and the winds are strong, and I’m afraid.” The television ad cites cases in which individuals and organizations are “punished” wholesale lingerieby the states for maintaining their beliefs and are forced to accept gay and lesbian values. The HRC offers a point-by-point rebuttal of the misleading, specious arguments. You can view the ad as well as the hilarious audition tapes after the jump.
