How to Locate a Good GPS Deal

With more smartphones like the recently announced Verizon Droid offering excellent GPS features, you have to ask yourself, do I really need a standalone GPS? The fact is for a lot less than a couple months’ worth of smartphone fees you can get a quality GPS with text to speech (TTS) or spoken street names, real-time traffic info and more.

We’re seeing the TomTom 130 offered at $79 which is a good price for an okay GPS. You only get text to speech on the 130s model and even then reviewers complain about not being able to hear it even in quiet cars. The TomTom XL365S has text to speech but lacks TomTom’s IQ Routes available in the 240 series, which can offer intelligent route advice. Our advice would be to consider spending another $50 for a unit like the Garmin nuvi 255W or another $125 for the highly rated Garmin nuvi 265WT that offers a wide screen and traffic info. You probably won’t find these offered in any Black Friday deal but you won’t have to stand in line in the rain and cold either. On the other hand, you may find the Garmin nuvi 205 for under $100 on Black Friday which would be a killer deal for a good budget widescreen TTS GPS. Another GPS that stands out is the Magellan Roadmate 1220 at $89. It has TTS, gets mostly good reviews, and normally sells for around $125.

the tomtom one 130 : good sound

the tomtom one 130 has very good sound, and loud enough, including downloadable voices.
the referred comment on "low volume" was certainly due to a wrong setting.
