| Should a Nine Year Old Have a Cell Phone? |
Your nine year old child comes to you and says “can I have my own cell phone?” Your first reaction might be “definitely not,” which gets the response, “but all my friends have their own cell phones.” At that point, you scratch you head and wonder what other parents are saying to their kids.
Retrevo studies how people use gadgets in everyday life and publishes the results in their Gadgetology Reports. A recent report looked at parenting and gadgets asking questions such as, what age should children get their first cell phone, their own computer, TV, or even social media page? If you are raising children or know someone who is, you might want to check out the results of this study to see how other parents deal with their kids and gadgets in the digital age.

| A Child's First Cell Phone |
  |
The most popular age for a child's first cell phone was 13 – 18 years old with almost 61% of parents indicating a child's passage into their teenage years was the right time for a cell phone. That said, over 31% of the parents of children younger than 9 would lower that age to (under 12)9 -12 especially since they probably planning on buying them a phone soon. The age goes up for the majority of parents of teenagers with 70% saying it’s okay for a (child 13 and over)13 year old to get a phone. Fortunately for today's youth, only about 5% of parents thought kids should wait until they graduated high school.

| Kids Are Getting Computers Before They Get Cell Phones |
  |
| When it came to a child's first computer the accepted age was lower than for cell phones with over 36% of parents saying age 9 – 12 was the right age for a computer. Many parents (31%) even said it was okay to get a child younger than 9 years old a computer. We guess after the kids pass the kindergarten entrance exam it's time for their own laptop. Once again, parents of younger children were more likely to lower the laptop bar with 73% of parents of children younger than 9 saying a child could get their first computer before they turn 12 compared to almost half that number (61%) of parents of 9 – 12 year olds. We wonder if the Apple iPad will lower that age further. |

Kids May Have to Wait For Their Own TV
|
  |
In many households a TV may be an effective “baby sitter” or even "tutor" especially for today’s “modern” parent as 48% of parents of children younger than 9 indicated they would get a child their own TV before they turn 12 and 51% of that same group saying a TV is okay before their child turns 12. Otherwise almost 53% of responding parents indicated kids need to wait until they are 13 or older with over 23% saying they should be older than 18 for that first TV. Hey kids, you can always watch TV on your computer while you're waiting for your own TV. |

| Should You Get Gadget Insurance? |
| Kids will be kids and we could have guessed what the responses would be to the question about losing gadgets. Not surprisingly it turns out the most common gadget for kids to have lost or stolen is, guess what…a cell phone. Over 24% of parents said their kids had gone through at least one cell phone. This was followed by MP3 players and gaming devices. Surprisingly, laptops were low on the list. The most likely age group to lose a device was 9 -12 year olds where more than half the parents of this age group indicated their kids have lost a cell phone, gaming device, MP3 player, etc. |
 |
|
| Conclusion |
It sure looks like some gadgets are filling roles in children's lives that help determine what age kids get their first gadgets. Today's parents of children younger than 9 might be using a TV as baby sitter and educator and so the TV becomes their baby's first gadget. This is followed by the computer that could help their kids get a competitive advantage. After the TV and laptop comes the cell phone to keep tabs on the kid's whereabouts. We did notice an interesting trend where parents of younger children tended to go with lower ages for their kids first gadgets. In other words, younger parents are getting their younger kids gadgets at younger ages.

It's not all about games,
It's not all about games, facebook and tracking your kids. Some families are in a unique situation where maybe the father works out of town for extended periods of time, and the mother may work nights. The child is then able to text or call the father when they want to, keeping in touch with the father and being able to text with the parents on the way home from school while on the bus, at night before they go to sleep or whenever they aren't with their parents. Not all of us want to track every movement of our children, we just want to be able to stay in touch and stay close.
Every family is different, and sometimes (no matter the age), cell phones are a great way for a parent and child to chat when they can't sit down and talk on the phone or talk in person.

If people are concerned with
If people are concerned with a child getting abducted or run over by a car as an excuse to gpurchase a cell phone for a child they are insane. They probably have a phone with all the little bells and whistles already. Just chip your child and use YOUR cell phones GPS to track you childs movements. That's sooo much cheaper and guess what, if your child is abducted, you'll know right where to find the corpse. YOU don't need a cell phone either, you are not THAT important.
Prepaid's the way to go
I think the best age is around 11, just when they enter middle school. I bought my boy his first cell phone hen they graduated from 5th grade but I suggest it's best to started him off with a prepaid plan -TracFone to be exact. It's super economical and easy for them to manage their own time. They become responsible and learn the basics of budgeting and management. While I only pay $20 for 150 minutes, he learns how to actually use a cell phone the frugal way. There's no reason why they shouldn't, other than finances, but with TracFrone's low rates and ease of use in terms of getting the minutes and getting real good quality phones, it really isn't a deal breaker any more Check out WalMart for the best plans and cell phones from this provider.
Tots Don't Need Tech
Cell phones are incredibly detrimental for children. If Mom is never more than a button press away, you no longer have to solve your own problems, plan out your day in advance, or think for yourself. We're crippling our children's ability to think for themselves. Cell phones steal their independence and sidestep problem solving opportunities. When at school, there's a phone in the office. When at home, there's a landline in most rooms. Cut the apron strings, helicopter parents, your children will be better for it!
http://freerangekids.wordpress.com/
I'm amazed by the weak excuses people use to justify cell phones as necessary & vital. Have you paid attention to what they're using them for? It's very often laughably trivial stuff that could've easily waited. Just because you CAN have instant communication doesn't necessarily mean that you SHOULD have it. Most adults, much less children, barely have a legitimate need for cell phones.
We walked and biked to school, arcades, the Mall, etc. when i was a kid and all without any sort of communications device in tow. Times aren't worse, society is just more skiddish, reactionary, and overprotective in needless ways.
The "everyone else has one" argument was never viable reasoning for anything before. Why should it be justification enough for all of the digital doodads that kids want now?

So just what does a child
So just what does a child under 13 need a cell phone for? Absolutely nothing if we're honest. Unless you like opening your wallet to funding the risk of txt bullying. A child under 13 will generally always be at school (where phones are not allowed), with their parents or with other parents/adults and their kids that the child's parents trust and who they can contact via these adults mobile phones. So where's this angst over 'for their safety' - parents who succumb to this advertising gimmick are just weak crowd pleasers who haven't thought this through.
I'm 13 and my mom got me a
I'm 13 and my mom got me a cell phone when I was 10. The reason? I biked to school and she needed to know that I had made it. We live in a midern world and younger kids are going to start needing cell phones to communicate with their parents, even if it's nit an emergency. I know moms are more likely to let a kid run to the toy store 20 feet away in a mall if they have a way to contact them.
What does a child need a cell phone for?
Everything you said is in a perfect world. When thinking about safty you have to consider situations that arise when the world is not perfect. Alot of children who are abducted are young. Having the ability to call a cell phone from a trunk and be located through the different programs that are available can save a life.
This is the safty alot of people are talking about. This isnt a situation for my daughter that I am planning on but I would not be a parent if I didn't consider it a possibility.
Why don't we just chip them
Why don't we just chip them and we will be able to watch our kids with our GPS. If you think that a cell phone is a mandatory requiremnt for safety, you might want to think agian. A cell phone will not stop your child from being abducted or hit by a car for that matter.
What about the health considerations
Thanks for these interesting statistics.
An important point I think this article fails to address is whether or not it is healthy for children to have cell phones, and these other devices.
I understand there are numerous studies indicating that the harmful effects of cell phone usage are greater for those under the age of 16 (I think that was the age). I understand this is due to the fact that the skull is less developed than that of an adult, letting through a greater degree of radiation. I understand it was also due to the fact that the brain is undergoing a great deal more neurological development, more so than in an adult, and thus the possibility for mutation of DNA and tissue structure from cell phone usage was considered to be greater in a child than in an adult.
As for studies on the detrimental effects of children watching a lot of television (something they are typically more likely to do if they have their own TV), there are many.
Again, thanks for an interesting article. It certainly opened my eyes to just how much acceptance these devices now have within the American population.
Whatever studies you are
Whatever studies you are looking at are incorrect. I assure you that the signals that cell phones use to communicate with cell towers are harmless to people, unless they tape it to their head and let it ring for about 20 years.
I have personal experience
I have personal experience with long talks on cellphones, and a slight headache after it.
Another friend also confirmed this and is now using a wired headset.
Even the ordinary sms usage, affects me.
I guess it all depends on one's sensitivity to the emissions given/taken by the mobile units.
Younger people have softer tissues, specifically in their heads, which is more vulnerable to these emissions. I read a study that prolonged exposure to this emission causes the soft tissues to heat up.
If you love your little ones, you better consider this matter very defensively.
Phone
Whatever each individual family decides to do concerning the proper age for a cell-phone or other gadget, insurance is a necessity. As a parent I have had to replace far too many dropped, drowned or otherwise destroyed cell phones.

Insurance or Milspec?
Which does your child (or you) need more? A "smartphone" with insurance or a durable "milspec" (military specification as determined by the US Department of Defense) phone? Especially for kids, a milspec phone that can be dunked, driven over, thrown off a tall building, shot, stabbed, baked, frozen, sandblasted, etc and still make a phone call might be a better choice. I have no children, but my mother is hard on phones (several a year)...but she's been fine since I convinced her to get a water resistant heavy duty milspec phone. Now, if only my provider allowed me to use multiple devices (use a sim card), I would happily get a milspec phone for when I'm out in the wilds and a smartphone for everyday use....too bad there's no milspec smartphone (though I hear that the iphone is the most popular device in the military today).
