6 Ways to Avoid a Speeding Ticket
Even though it looks like the photo-enforcement cameras in Arizona are going to be removed, and many cities are abandoning their red-light cameras, hard economic times no doubt may be a factor in stepping up the use of automated systems for generating tickets in many municipalities across the country. We would never encourage anyone to disregard speed limits but as vacationers are hitting the road this summer and commuters rack up miles week over week, we thought we’d provide some updated info on radar detectors and add some new gadgets and apps that could minimize your chances of getting a ticket.
*Keep in mind that some of these devices are illegal in VA, Washington D.C, U.S. Military bases and many foreign countries.
Two Top Rated Radar Detectors with GPS
Whether you think speed cameras make roads and highways safer or just generate revenue at the expense of motorists, is another discussion but the latest radar detectors with built-in GPS components can greatly decrease the odds of getting a ticket. These new GPS-based radar detectors help spot speed traps and can also tell you when you’re approaching a red light or speed camera. Because GPS-enabled radar detectors can tell what speed you are going, devices like the top rated BEL GX65 and Passport 9500ix reduce sensitivity at low speed driving to minimize false alarms in urban areas. Push the mute button three times and these radar detectors store the locations of a false alarm sources like automatic door openers and won’t sound an alert the next time you drive by one of them. The BEL GX65 and the Passport 9500ix have also been shown to be very difficult to detect by the Spectre radar detector, detector (RDD) used by authorities in states like Virginia to spot motorists illegally using radar detectors. The Passport 9500ix is noteworthy for having a very long detection range which helps spot police using “instant-on” guns that are only on for brief periods. Testers also found the BEL GX65 as effective as the Passport in detecting a new class of ultra-low-power radar.
These Devices Could Pay for Themselves
Some users think the BEL GX65 which uses the Trinity database of photo enforcement locations has the best database however, the Passport database is highly rated too. In order to get updates you’ll need to buy a subscription which can cost up to $29.95 for three years. You can always enter new locations manually for free. The BEL GX95 is a little less expensive than the $499 Passport, costing around $470 but add up fines, traffic school, and higher insurance rates and these devices can pay for themselves in short order.
There’s An App for That
Having the location of speed traps and red light cameras available on your iPhone or Android phone might come in handy. Trapster is free and has been updated to work in the background under iOS 4. You can be alerted to speed traps or join the Trapster network of users that report speed traps. A competing app called Speed Cameras, comes from Europe and costs $2.99 but doesn’t get the greatest reviews on iTunes.
A Public Database of Cameras
PhotoEnforced is a database of photo-enforced locations (mostly red light cameras and speed cameras) updated by anonymous users around the country. Unfortunately is doesn’t have a great reputation for the most reliable data.
The GPS Angel is Watching
Out for You

This $99 GPS device won’t provide turn-by-turn navigation but it will alert you to a nearby red light or speed camera. You update the database (free for a lifetime) through your computer and the device’s USB connector and away you go.

Speeding

I have a piece of equipment that rarely fails in preventing me from getting a speeding ticket. It is called a brain.
I believe Harbor Freight carries them, they carry everything else.

GPS/radar detector

Why, why, why can't someone develop one unit that has turn by turn directions with a built in radar detector? Talk about a gold mine! Who will step up first??

Radar Dectectors

I know they are only sold direct (hence you won't read about them in these pages) but Valentine One detectors are STILL the best on the market. Hands down. If you buy something cheaper, caveat emptor! 15 years experience with V-1 speaks volumes.

Valentine I

I agree, it tells you exactly where the radar is coming from, in front, side (which side) or behind, its upgradable and supposedly has great range. I have a Whistler Pro73 because I couldnt afford the valantine. that one is definetly my next radar detector. the Pro 73 doesnt tell you about the radar until they are right on you and it gives off tons of false alerts. With Radar detectors you get what you pay for.

I suggest you try

The Valentine the next time you get a chance! Driving a Buick up to 500 miles a day
and they pay for themselves quickly! (I run not only the super slabs, but the city streets in places like Charlotte NC and Murphy) Pick up a copy of Road & Track or visit them on line!
Killer protection and when using the 'hidden' mounting option, Va. troopers never know you got it!

Do the safe and right thing

You could all save a load of money just by 1) driving the speed limit and hence, avoiding getting ticketed 2) not buying devices that encourage you to disobey the speed limit. Please, driving is a privilege, not a right, and your job is to obey the law and help keep yourself and others safe, NOT to use scary tactics and sneaker devices to dodge around the law. Driving is dangerous as it is; don't make it worse for yourself and your fellow drivers.

Get Real!

1. Many towns, especially in these 'lean' times, use "questionable" tactics regarding selective enforcement, unrealistic / unreasonable / frequently changing speed limits to boost their chances of catching your money.

2. There aren't enough hours in the day to drive where we have to go, do our jobs, and get home while 'driving the speed limit' - which is usually 10 to 20 MPH under what the road was designed for, and what an experienced, prudent driver would drive if there was not posted limit.

IMHO, people that always drive the speed limit (or less) are: 1) on their way to/or/from a crime with a car full of evidence; 2) Retired or Unemployed people with no kids or other responsibilities; 3) People that are so rigid (gestapo-like) that they insist that we all march in goose-step, lock-step; 3) They are often the ones doing the speed limit (or less) in the left lane, turning left from the right lane, and creating 'rolling road-blocks' by staying beside someone for miles and miles.

Speeding

Amen!

Speeding and petty crime in NZ

Mr Safe no doubt is one of those many people driving 80 in a 100 zone in the passing lane. I have driven in a lot of countries but have never experienced such slow drivers who hog the passing lane.
It would be nice to see the stats on how many accidents were caused by frustrated drivers trying to get around these people on 2 or 3 lane highways.
The radar detector is a must in these circumstances as it would just take too long to get pass these people at the speed limit. Add to that the cops prolific revenue generating stings making the radar detector all the more important.

I have had 18 breakins since I moved to NZ. that was never a worry back in Canada....not a break in after 25 years of driving. Get the cops off the revenue gravy train and have them direct more attention to the rampant burglary that occurs here.
