No Lines at Apple Stores
for These New Products

Steve Jobs took the stage once again at what is traditionally been an iPod show and sure enough, showed off some new iPods. Although there were plenty of cool new Apple products, we don't think any of them will require buyers to line up outside their local Apple store. Here are some of the highlights:
What is HDR?
A new photo feature for iPhones called high dynamic range (HDR) that takes 3 photos at different exposure settings and algorithmically combines them into a photo that is supposedly better than ordinary smartphone cameras can take.
iOS Bug Fix
There is an iOS 4.1 bug fix upgrade that should take care of most of the major bugs except the antenna problem (for that you'll have to wait for new hardware). iOS 4.2 is due in November and adds a lot of functions to iPads like the ability to print and multitask.
Apple Becomes More Social
Jobs showed off some new social networking aspects for some of Apple's products like Game Center that provides a platform for multi-player gaming.
New iPods Look Kind of Cool
The new iPod Shuffle talks to you with Apple's VoiceOver, it has a clip that makes them easy to wear, they come in 5 different colors, store 2GB, and cost $49.

The new iPod Nano is a bit more interesting than the new shuffle. Gone is the click wheel that revolutionalized MP3 players in favor of a small 1.5-inch touchscreen display. Critics are already questioning the loss of the click wheel that used to make it easy to control your iPod without having to look at it. You get an FM radio with the Nano but where did the videogo? How are we going to watch video podcasts? You get special Nano icons that look like apps for controlling the Nano. The 8GB Nano costs $149 and the 16GB version goes for $179

What came as no surprise was an updated iPod Touch which is basically a skinnier iPhone 4 without the phone. The prices range from $229 for 8GB to $399 for 64GB and will be available the week of Sept. 6th.

New iTunes Includes
Social Function Called Ping

In a nod to Twitter, Apple's new Ping allows you to "follow" what other iTunes users are listening to. Ping will find its way to other iOS devices soon. Jobs noted iTunes 10 is more simple and elegant but we still feel it could use some work in the usability department. Note the new iTunes logo, they felt it was time to lose the CD.

Apple TV

It's small, costs $99 and will be available in 4 weeks. Frankly we were underwhelmed and we'll tell you why, right here.
