Compact Cameras Are Still Relevant
in the Age of Smartphones
Do you find yourself reaching for your new smartphone more often than that old point-and-shoot? If so, you’re not alone –many see compact cameras as the next victims of the smartphone revolution. Phones like the iPhone are often seen as quite satisfactory for snapshots, but many photographers feel constrained by the lack of options. If you want the features of a full-sized DSLR camera but still want a compact solution, a mirrorless camera should be the perfect buy.
Mirrorless Cameras Are Like Compact DSLRs
Mirrorless cameras offer a good compromise of quality and convenience due to their small size and versatility. These cameras were designed to circumvent the mechanics needed by a "reflex" optical viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras use a larger sensor than most point and shoot cameras which allow the cameras to produce images that approach the quality of DSLRs, while still maintaining a slim profile. They offer more features than smartphones in regard to exposure, shutter speed, and sensor size and they also have interchangeable lenses.  However, they are quite a bit more expensive than most point and shoot cameras. Here are some good mirrorless cameras you might want to consider if you're looking for an upgrade.

Samsung NX200
(~$900)
The NX200 is a well-built mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that offers superior image quality, though its lack of an optical or electronic viewfinder will be a drag for most people.

Pentax Q
(~$700)
The Pentax Q is the most compact mirrorless camera on the market and includes a convenient pop-up flash, which helps reduce lens shadow and red-eye.

Nikon 1 V1 (~$900)

If you feel like a viewfinder is crucial for a good experience, the Nikon V1 would be perfect for you. It includes a high-resolution (1.4 million dots) electronic view finder (EVF) which mimics a traditional optical viewfinder quite well.  It also includes a larger display that you can use if you prefer.

Fujifilm X100 (~$1200)
This camera is one of the best-looking models we’ve seen - many people are touting its unique non-zooming lens and hybrid (optical and electric) viewfinder. This is about as good as mirrorless cameras get.

Sony NEX-7
(~$950)
The NEX-7 is the beefed up version of an older NEX model and includes an OLED electronic viewfinder and delivers impressive picture quality as well.
Micro Four Thirds Cameras Are Also Mirrorless
One of the standards you may run across will be Micro Four Thirds – a proprietary format used by Panasonic and Olympus. Originally, it only shot in a fixed 4:3 aspect ratio (hence the name) but newer models have the ability to natively shoot in 16:9 and 3:2 as well.  HDTVs, many laptops and tablets have widescreen 16:9 displays and photos taken in that aspect ratio will look better on those screens. Another advantages of this system is the use of a larger sensor (a 4/3-type), which takes in more light and produces better photos.  These sensors are larger than most point and shoot cameras and take better photos in low light conditions. Keep in mind that the Micro Four Thirds lenses can be used on any model, regardless of maker - you can even buy an adaptor for your existing collection of lenses.

Panasonic Lumix GF2
(~$350)
The Lumix GF2 is a compact camera that captures some pretty nice photos – it even has the option to shoot content in 3D.

Panasonic Lumix GH2
(~$900)
The GH2 represents one of Panasonic’s higher end cameras and includes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder as well as a pop-up flash.

Olympus PEN E-PL1
(~$300)
The PEN E-PL1 is one of Olympus’ more compact and affordable cameras using Micro Four Thirds technology. It has some of the features typically found in a full-sized DSLR and can be equipped with a detachable electronic viewfinder.
