MMS on the iPhone…Finally!
Friday, September 25th has come and gone and now AT&T supports MMS on the iPhone. Just in case you aren't familiar with MMS, it’s an extension of SMS or “texting,” that allows you to send longer message lengths than 160 characters for things like photos. Maybe Twitter will follow suit and support photos? Hey, with MMS finally showing up on the iPhone can tethering be far behind?
Hot, Cool Tech on Display at IDF
Intel put on their annual show and tell, the Intel Developers Forum (IDF). The stars of the show were the new Core i7 chips codenamed Clarksfield for laptops. These multi-core chips can run as fast as 3.2GHz in Turbo mode and can turn cores on and off to save power and boost speed.
SuperSpeed USB 3.0 on the Fast Track
USB 3.0 also known as SuperSpeed USB has been in “development” for years. At the recent Intel Developers Forum many new USB 3.0 gadgets were on display. USB 3.0 promises to deliver up to 10x times the data transfer rates of USB 2.0 making possible devices like the Point Grey video camera that can stream 1080p video at 60fps. Freecom, a German company also recently announced the first USB 3.0 external hard drive which transfers up to 130MB per second compared to 40MB for USB 2.0. You’ll need to upgrade to new USB cables which fortunately will be backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. Companies like Accell Cables recently announced new SuperSpeed USB cables that can run up to six meters.
Smaller, Faster, Cheaper?
At the IDF, Intel also showed off the world’s first functional 22nm chips, halving the size of current state-of-the-art 45nm chips. Expect to see 32nm chips (code named Sandy Bridge) used in the interim while the industry waits for the 22nm chips to become available. The wafer on display had more than 2.9 billion transistors on a piece of silicon the size of a fingernail. Could Ray Kurzweil’s “Singularity,” be far away?
Want a Big LCD TV?
Samsung announced a 65 inch LCD TV which is expected to ship at the end of the month at a suggested retail price of $5,995. It offers 120Hz refresh and connectivity features that let you access online services like Flickr and Youtube. This could be a good TV to consider for your home until you look the Vizio 55" VF551XVT which out-specs the Samsung (except for the size) and costs a third of the price. The Vizio is LED backlit, has 240Hz refresh, ambient room light sensing for auto-dimming and uses less energy.
I Can’t Hear You Now…
There was news of some AT&T 3G MicroCell testing going on around the country. Microcells are like little cell phone “repeaters” for your home or business. They work with your broadband connection to provide cell phone access to locations with weak or no cell phone signals. No clear picture yet on how much if anything it will cost AT&T customers.
To Your Health…
It’s not cheap, but neither is a year’s worth of co-pays on your blood pressure medication. For $379 on Hammacher Schlemmer you can get an interesting “isometric exerciser,” that they say was, “developed from technology used by the U.S. Air Force to improve F-16 pilots' blood circulation.” According to the information about this device, “University studies correlate the handgrip trainer's isometric exercise to the calming of the user's sympathetic nervous system, the reduction of their resting heart rate, and lowering of their blood pressure. Clinical research by cardiovascular specialists shows the device lowers blood pressure in 90% of users who perform the therapy 12 minutes per day, five days a week.”
