HDTV Set Sales Fall With Rising Prices

HDTV set sales are falling off as prices rise, according to Retrevo, a
Web-based operation that tracks consumer electronics trends. The
Retrevo folks say that HDTV set prices have increased as much as 30
percent since mid-January, and during the same period, demand has
decreased “while other electronics product categories remained flat or
increased slightly.” more

CEA Knocks California TV Energy Regs

    California's proposed energy efficiency standards for television sets will cost consumers money, says the Consumer Electronics Association in a study to be released this week...The CEA fusillade raises the question: Are the longterm energy savings of efficient TVs enough to overcome consumer resistance to initially higher purchase prices?   According to the Retrevo CE Index HDTV prices are on the rise in February. This is the first rise in prices since May 2008. Prices in February were up 10% after dropping approximately a total 35% from May 2008 to January 2009. Demand for HDTVs spiked as you might expect in January due to the holidays and Superbowl. There's nothing like a big sporting event to get people out and buying TVs. more

Digital TV may bypass skid row

    Low-income people who lack addresses recognized by the census can't get coupons for converter boxes... Single-room occupancy hotels such as the Sanborn, which is operated by the Skid Row Housing Trust, are classified by the federal government as business addresses, not residential, and therefore are ineligible...

There are other options... Community leaders could set up programs to help people donate coupons they don't need to those who aren't eligible to get them on their own. A company called Retrevo has set up a website, at www.retrevo.com/dtv, to do just that.  more
