This Week in Gadgets: Launch Date and Pricing of Blackberry PlayBook

THIS WEEK IN GADGET
Blackberry Playbook, AT&T /T-Mobile,
and Google Voice on Sprint

Launch Date and Pricing of Blackberry PlayBook

Research In Motion announced that the PlayBook would be available in the U.S. and Canada on April 19. In an effort to compete with the $499 iPad 2, the 16GB PlayBook will be available for $499, the 32GB for $599, and the 64GB for $699. You can pre-order the new gadget now through Best Buy.

Amazon Launches Appstore

There have been rumors for awhile, but Amazon finally did it – launching its very own Android Appstore with 3,800 applications. In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, rather than incurring the wrath of Google with this move, Amazon has been hit by Apple with a lawsuit. It claims trademark infringement and unfair competition over the name.
CTIA

  • AT&T stunned everyone by making an offer to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion. Consumers cried - none more so than current T-Mobile customers.
  • Sprint and Google announced a partnership that turns your Sprint phone number into a Google Voice number. This will give users access to the expanded voice mail services (your life isn’t complete until you experience the hilarity that is voicemail transcription), call forwarding, international calls, visual voicemail and call forwarding to multiple devices.
  • Several exciting new phones were announced. A few that caught our eye were the T-Mobile G2X, which runs on Froyo and is designed specifically for gaming; HTC’s new EVO 3D running Gingerbread and can both display and capture 3D content; the Kyocera Echo, available on Sprint, with two full size touchscreens; and the LG Thrill, exclusive to AT&T, and also featuring a stereoscopic 3D display.
Firefox 4 Released
It’s been two years since Firefox 3.5, but the wait was worth it. Firefox 4 features a nice clean interface, Panorama tab control (for those of us with short attention spans this helps to organize all the many tabs we keep open), HTML 5 compatibility and multicomputer synchronization. I switched to Chrome for the tabbed browsing and the stark simplicity of the browser, but I think it’s time to head back to Firefox.
