SUNNYVALE, Calif. – April 21, 2009 – The latest GadgetologyTM study from Retrevo, shows that women know more about consumer electronics products and men don't know as much as they think they know. Retrevo's Gadgetology study is a program that examines the science behind buying and using personal technology.
Women, traditionally a secondary audience for CE, are not only displaying a new affinity for electronics but their knowledge rivals, and often surpasses their male counterparts. The study found 79% of men felt “extremely tech savvy,” compared to only 55% of women. However, a greater percentage of women actually knew that “MB” stands for megabytes.
When asked if CE terminology and buzzwords made it difficult to shop, only 7% of men agreed, compared to 18% of women. However, when the same people were asked what “1080p meant”, 25% of men gave the wrong answer while only 17% women answered incorrectly. In addition, more women admitted they didn’t know what 1080p meant rather than giving an incorrect answer.
The study also found that women are more attached to their gadgets. When asked to choose between giving up a Computer or Caffeine, 82% of women wanted their computer compared to 75% of men.
“This Gadgetology report highlights several developments that manufacturers and retailers need to know before they build and market their products,” says Vipin Jain, president and CEO of Retrevo. “Not only are women buying and using more CE than ever before, but they’re also becoming savvier, something that the industry has yet to, but needs to, reflect. Every single component of the CE industry has been affected by the recession and is trying to figure out how to make money in the new economy. Our Gadgetology report suggests that women might be the answer.”
