As the summer vacation season kicked into high gear, camcorder demand jumped almost 20% over a three-month period starting in April, the Retrevo Pulse reported, debunking popular theory that cameras are cannibalizing the market.
“Even staycations and record unemployment couldn’t dampen consumers’ desire to capture the summer of ’09 for posterity’s sake,” said Vipin Jain, CEO of Retrevo. “In contrast, it looks like two to three iPods per person is enough. And, if consumers are hitting the road in large numbers then TVs may not jump off the shelves again until the fall TV season starts.”
The Retrevo Pulse indexes showed MP3 player demand off 30% since the end of February, while TVs have stayed flat since dropping 25% 120 days ago.
More evidence that vacationers are taking to the road this summer due to increasing airfare and moderately priced gasoline was an increase in demand for GPS devices, headsets and 2-way radios. However, portable DVD players – down 20% after peaking in March – were not been able to shake their spring funk.
“GPS had been on a slide, partially due, we suspect, to devices like iPhones that can make a stand-alone GPS unnecessary,” said Jain.
Besides camcorders (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Camcorders.html), GPS devices (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/GPS.html) and headsets, other hot consumer electronics product categories for June, based on rising demand versus overall volume, included car accessories such as receivers, amplifiers (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Car-Amplifier.html) and radar detectors.
