Best Apps for a Holiday Weekend Road Trip
With a long weekend approaching and summer vacations not far behind we thought we’d offer this list of useful and fun apps to keep you and your family entertained, well fed, and out of trouble on your next road trip. Drive carefully!
1. Family Car Games ($1.99)
We’re not sure the kids wouldn't rather watch the in-car video or fight over the iPad, but for some quality family time in the car, this app could be worth a lot more than $1.99.
2. Rest Area Finder (Free)
When nature calls or the dog needs to be walked, this would be the app to turn to. They say it finds the nearest rest area based on your current location and tells you how long you are going to have to wait.
3. Urbanspoon (Free)
Urbanspoon shows up on everyone’s must-have list of apps for road trips. You shake your phone and Urbanspoon will recommend places to eat in your vicinity.
4. Trapster (Free)
We’re not suggesting that anyone should drive over the speed limit but knowing where the speed traps and red light cameras are might be interesting information to have available. You can be alerted to speed traps or join the network of users that report speed traps.
5. Cheap Gas! (Free)
As the name says, you can check out the cheapest gas in your vicinity and get directions to help you find it.
6. Clickon Radio Lite (Free)
For the growing minority of travelers who still listen to the car radio, this app could help you find a station that you might enjoy listening to.
7. AAA Discounts (Free)
If you’re a member of AAA this app could save you a few bucks on your next trip. It uses your location to identify merchants who offer AAA member discounts.
8. HearPlanet ($4.99)
It’s like have a tour guide along with you, telling you interesting facts about somewhere you’re visiting or you can see what’s interesting in your vicinity.
9. Where To? ($2.99)
Finds places to eat, drink, places or interest, or even the closest subway station. Even has a random “surprise me,” suggestion feature.
10. The Weather Channel (Free)
Last but not least, we say don’t forget to have a good weather app in your bag of tricks. The Weather Channel makes a good one.
