Small Business Electronics Demand Stays Strong Despite Economic Downturn

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – August 5, 2009 – Demand for Small-businesses-friendly electronics products increased this summer, signaling an economic silver lining, according to data from Retrevo Pulse, a publicly-available index that maps daily price and demand trends in the consumer electronics industry across 40 categories and over 4,000 products. These trends reflect the American Entrepreneurs undying optimism and spirit, as they continue spending money on consumer electronics products that foster productivity.

Meat-and-potato consumer gadgets used to operate small businesses and search for jobs– monitors, printers, projectors, scanners, telephones, and storage devices – all maintained steady demand levels in recent months and even grew in many cases. Demand for projectors during July, was up 30% from the month of June, while demand for printers was up more than 30% from the beginning of the year. Monitors and storage devices have increased more than 20% in the past year.

“According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses represent the majority of America’s 27.2 million businesses. Considering these businesses have generated between 60% and 80% of new jobs in the past decade, we believe the increase in small-business-friendly gadget categories may be an early indicator of overall economic improvement,” says Retrevo CEO Vipin Jain.

“American small business professionals today are taking inventory of the technology they use and asking, what can my gadgets do for me? A projector (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Projector.html), for example, is a must-have tool for any entrepreneur making a presentation. A new or extra monitor (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Monitor.html) and a multifunction printer (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Multifunction-Printer.html) are standard equipment for a sole proprietor, small business owner, or home office worker,” said Jain.  “Prices for monitors have been falling and multiple monitors can greatly improve productivity.”
