Tablet Computers: Buy Now or Wait?
By some estimates there were over 100 tablet computers announced or presented at CES this year. With the rumored, camera-equipped, Apple iPad 2 likely to make an appearance in the first half of the year, is this the right time to buy a tablet or are you better off waiting for the new iPad or one of many attractive new Android tablets? To make it easier for you to decide, we put together a chart showing some of the hotter tablets along with estimated release dates.
Tablet Segmentation Starting to Appear
We’ll be honest, there isn’t a lot of difference among tablets; they all have touchscreens and run apps. Some will be powered by dual core processors while others will run older and newer versions of Android. We saw a few interesting tablet variations at CES this year including tablets with keyboards that slide out from under a touchscreen like ones from Samsung, Acer and ASUS, and another from ASUS which connects to a dock and “transforms” into a laptop. This should be a good year for anyone wanting to buy a tablet. They only questions will be which one and when?
What’s Missing On the Chart?
We left out a bunch of Windows 7 tablets like the Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Slate, and others from notebook vendors like Lenovo and Fujitsu partly because we not sure these are in the same class of “app-based,” devices. We know Windows 7 has lots of multi-touch capability and there is no shortage of software to run including MS Office but we’re going to wait and see how well Windows 7 is accepted as a tablet OS. We also left out many other Android-based tablets which may turn out to be popular choices this year.
Buy Now or Wait?
If you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket and feel the need for a tablet today, we would probably lean toward an iPad just because the new tablet-optimized version of Android (3.0 aka Honeycomb) is not quite here yet. However, we also think it’s as much about the apps as anything and both today’s Apple and Android tablets or tomorrow’s should run their apps just fine.

Anybody know anything about Creative Zii0?

On paper, this unit has a lot of nice features. I'm looking primarily for an ebook reader but I like a lot of the other features. My question, do you think Creative is really serious about this product or just testing the water? Go to their site and they are always temporarily out of the product at the time. Comments?

Dongle? or Teather?

Any word on when ATT users may be able to teather their I phones to either their Mac Books or to their IPads? Not every place has WiFi or 3G connectivity.

Tablets

Wow, this article and it's charts have a lot to be desired. For one thing there is no mention of types of screens and future developements. For instance the Adam tablet will have Honeycomb once it is released so there really should be a "Yes" with an asterisk in the OS column. Also, the Adam has an amazing Pixel Qi screen which allows viewing in direct sunlight not to mention it's many ports for connectivity. As you prob. guessed I am a fan of the Adam along with a lot of others often referred to as Adam-ites. If you look closer at this tablet, and Notion Ink's company philosophy, you'll see why there are sooo many fans! To be balanced, I do like the look and sound of other tablets but none are the work horse the Adam tablet is. At this point, it's the only tablet that could possibly replace some PC's. Personally I spend a lot of time working on my PC i.e. sitting at my desk, and I look forward to being a lot more mobile!

Tablets & Phones

When will we be able to use the tablet as a cell phone? I wouldn't mind having the tablet double as my cellphone thru bluetooth.

What is the projected availability of the above mentioned capability?
