New and Cool

New And Cool For October
For this edition of New and Cool, we selected a trio of tiny projectors, a new laptop, and some other new and shiny gadgets.

New Apple Products
Apple announced a bunch of new products including a monster 24 inch monitor with an LED backlight and built-in camera. It will support 1920 x 1200 resolution, includes stereo speakers, and will cost $899 when it goes on sale in November.

New Macbooks were also announced that feature a monolithic, machined aluminum frame that adds stiffness while reducing weight. The new Macbooks will incorporate a new NVIDIA graphics chip set and a multi-touch trackpad that supports iPhone-like gestures.

The new Macbooks come in 13.3 and 15.4 screen sizes and will cost from $1299 to $2499. Apple also dropped the price of its older Macbook to $999.

Is That a Projector in Your Pocket?
We’re not sure this isn’t a solution in search of a problem but you never know when you might have to whip out your projector and make a quick presentation. Three new mini-projectors have emerged and one of them is also a modified iPhone:

Chinavision Projector Phone
The Chinavision Projector Phone is a smartphone with a projector built in. The phone runs on a variant of the iPhone OS. The projector outputs 640 x 480 and can almost make it through a 2 hour movie before running out of juice. You can buy it now for $370.

Toshiba Pico Projector
Although not shipping yet, this LED-based projector fits in palm of your hand and weighs only 4 oz (a quarter pounder).

3M MPro 110
This tiny projector from 3M is due to go on sale any day for $359.

HP Elitebook 6930p Open 24 Hours
HP introduced a new ruggedized 4.7 lb. laptop with a 14.1 inch WXGA (1280 x 800) display that claims to last 24 hours on a single charge. The HP Elitebook 6930p incorporates a special LED backlight and solid state drive (SSD) to help extend the battery life. It is expected to be available in October. Pricing details have not been announced.

AirCurve from Griffin Technology
For a round $20, iPhone owners will soon be able to buy an “acoustic” amplifier that uses no power and employs “coiled waveguide” technology to amplify the iPhones built-in speaker. Griffin says it’s great to use as a speakerphone. You can also add a Griffin dock which will charge your iphone at the same time.

Palm Treo Pro Could Be a Real Sleeper
The Palm Treo Pro just started shipping. It’s a Windows Mobile smartphone that you can buy unlocked for $549. It offers many features missing on the iPhone like removable battery, tethering, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, MicroSD slot. Here’s a list of features

Kodak OLED Photo Frame
Sony’s OLED TV was the talk of last year’s CES with its stunning image quality and super thin design. Kodak, who owns patents associated with OLED displays has introduced a 7.6 inch WiFi-enabled, OLED photo frame due to ship in time for the holidays. It will include an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the brightness to fit the room lighting. It won’t come cheap at an MSRP of $999.
