The built in speaker is good if your sharing with someone else, but the included earbuds have very good audio quality...I would deal with the 'cons' of the device and figure out how to pay for it later...The device has excellent sound and good Mp4 compatibility...

I almost didn't buy this thing because of the bad reviews noting how the Archos AV500 would not record DVDs, or the actual video size was smaller than the screen, blah, blah, blah...etc...They're flying off the shelves where I live!...
The "wow" factor brings clients one step closer to the sale...Screen quality and battery life seem good to me...in comparison ipod can go 25min of audio w/o spining up the hdd...
