The HV30 has very good low light capability...The pictures are not all that great but not bad either...I would still recommend a dedicated digital camera to take better quality still photos...
Low light performance is very good for a consumer camera...The built-in camera mic is a typical camcorder mic...not very good for professional use, but as a consumer camera, does the job...I've heard some people will buy another HV-30 to use as a deck...not a bad idea since you could then load through component connections but still not like a pro deck...
zoom is very nice and smooth, as well as overall handling...The picture quality is very good...The housing for the MiniDV cassette feals a little flimsy when it's open, but overall the camera has a quality feel to it...
