I would definitely recommend D60 over D40x (unless you are saving a couple of hundred dollars or more...If you are buying this camera (or D40), I highly recommend getting 55-200 VR lens which is around $200...It produces pictures as good as or better than Canon's new Xsi and for a lot less...
With the exception of a few minor weaknesses noted below, the D60 has nearly everything I could ask for in a compact DSLR and is nearly perfect when combined with the spectacular 16-85mm VR zoom lens...Focus accuracy with the kit lens is very good...I am not an expert but so far so good for my first dSLR ever...
The controls are easy to use, you get good pics, and it is pretty cheap...Overall i do love this camera Truly an amazing camera! I stepped up from a Canon G9 and have been blown away by the features and performance of this camera...The only thing I wish that Nikon had included was a live view option for those macro shots where it is more difficult to get into a good position...
