The HV30 has very good low light capability...The pictures are not all that great but not bad either...I would still recommend a dedicated digital camera to take better quality still photos...
However, having mentioned the negatives, the bottom line is still performance and this camcorder takes great video...I highly recommend it to you if you can tolerate the tape recording like me...However the video didn't look that good on compter was infact worse than DV, saw that the default setting for Sony SW was 720p, changed that to 1440x1080 but still it is not that good, will experiment some...
The stock image is good in spite of compression and squishing...Very good quality for the close to no budget filmmaker, but you'll need editing software, and either time to learn a free way to capture 24p, or money...Battery life can be a bit short, and there aren't many good long-life options out there...but it's a new camera...
