A 5.1 receiver is an important component of any home theater. A 5.1 receiver supports 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Most new 5.1 receivers support the latest audio standards like Dolby and DTS. Some 5.1 receivers have a built-in DVD player, maybe even a Blu-ray player. You can get a 5.1 receiver for a reasonable price. Some 5.1 receivers cost less than $300 and even include speakers. High end 5.1 receivers cost more but offer better audio, more inputs, and other features not found on low-end 5.1 receivers.
"For those who wish to build or maintain a simple but high quality 5.1 HT setup, I highly recommend the Yamaha RX-V465...Sound from TV and DVD player are excellent and there are some good surround sound enhancements available (as well as the standard eq tweaks...Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase..." read more »

"The bad news is that this situation always involves making compromises...The good news is there are receivers like the Pioneer VSX-517 out there that offer a great list of features for very little money...If you are willing to settle for a nice little home theater room with a 5.1 speaker system and you aren't looking for something that can decode high-resolution audio from HDMI-equipped source components, this receiver could be a great fit for your needs..." read more »

"All of Pioneer's new AV receivers at CES 2009 score pretty well on the price-to-feature metric, but the VSX-819H hits the sweet spot...The connectivity and decoding options already make the $300 price tag look good, but when you throw in more unique features like Auto Level Control, and the ability to browse both Sirius and your iPod onscreen, it jumps out as a great deal...It will be interesting to see how the VSX-819H stacks up when competitors release their new 2009 lines, but right now it looks like a top contender for those looking to maximize their home-theater dollar..." read more »

"The Pioneer VSX-918V hails from the value line where it is second from the top...I’m going to depart from the norm and tell you my conclusion up front...If you prefer to tweak your receiver manually, Pioneer recommends that you run the auto setup, then copy the settings to the custom menu and take it from there..." read more »
