"Competition is so fierce that today's gizmos must look good and slip into your pocket comfortably if they're to force their heads above the increasingly vicious riptide of new products...Route 66's latest sat-nav - the Mini - has at least made me think twice about that choice...The Mini is also a pretty good-looking product - at least as far as sat-navs go...It's not just the physical design of the Mini that appeals, though - it's also an extremely easy device to use..." read more »

"So, having given you a bit of choice in terms of hardware, let's look at the software...Mobile 7 is the version for Windows Mobile Standard and the manufacturer claims it's the most complete GPS navigation solution...The Mobile 7 application also has something for those who often get speeding tickets - it will give away a warning signal once a predefined speed limit is exceeded...The user interface of Mobile 7 is really cool but, frankly, the other navigation solutions included in this article do have their strong points too...The price of the Symbian variety of Mobile 7 varies from 199.95 to 249.95 Euro depending on the included maps..." read more »

"Once over the installation hurdle (entering the licence code on our test phone was unnecessarily fiddly), Route 66 Mobile 8 is simple to use...It features a highly configurable display for driving, allowing as much or as little information as you like, even changing the transparency of the info bar that overlays the map...With versions for both Symbian Series 60 and Windows Mobile, this is a decent package that can be recommended to most users – though if you have a Nokia phone the included software gives it a good run for the money..." read more »

"• Easy to install • Accurate satellite navigation...• Adding the GPS receiver can make things expensive...Route 66 Navigate 7 offers a good way to get satellite navigation on a handheld computer and proves reliable and accurate in operation...The idea behind Route 66 Navigate 7 is to allow owners of handheld PCs running the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system to turn their gadget into a satellite navigation device......" read more »

Reviews: You also get a nice selection of goodies in the box including a car mount, car charger, protective case, headphones, 2GB SD card with maps pre-loaded, USB cable, manual on CD and a DVD of the maps...During testing the 8000 acquired a signal/our position pretty quickly and its routes were accurate - though they could have been a touch more efficient...Our ploy of going the wrong way during a route did not seem to faze the 8000 one bit, routes were re-calculated quickly and each destination was spoken clearly...The Route 66 8000 provides a good set of features and performance for your money, though it lacks TMC as standard, text to speech and Bluetooth support, its Fuzzy search system is a real bonus...

Reviews: Route 66 is one of the best known names in mobile sat nav and now it’s taking on the dedicated in-car boys, with the Maxi and the Mini...The Maxi name refers to the fact that it uses a 4.3in widescreen display and contains maps for all of Europe...The Route 66 impresses out of the box thanks to a shiny silver logo and a brushed metal effect bezel...Route 66 makes use of Navteq sourced maps and these are displayed with some style by the Maxi...Perhaps the biggest problem for the Maxi though is that hands free calling over Bluetooth and traffic info via TMC can only be added with an optional cradle that costs an extra £60, which when it comes to value, leaves the Route66 on the road to nowhere...
