Satellite Radio Buying Guides
High-quality programming, minimal interruptions, oodles of channels. Is satellite radio really as cool as it sounds? Yep. Read on to learn what you need to know to get going with a service and a system.... Your choice of service providers is not complicated. There are two to choose from: XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Both services use radical digital audio compression and--with fidelity roughly equivalent to or better than that of clear FM radio reception--both sound surprisingly good. You'll find the biggest differences in their programming, outlined below.... At a minimum, you need a satellite radio receiver, an antenna, and a subscription to a radio service, which you activate directly with the service provider. (Instructions are included with your receiver purchase.) Satellite radio is subscription only (monthly or yearly), and reception requires a service-specific receiver to decode a service's encrypted radio signal. At this time you'll have to choose between XM and Sirius providers--each about ten dollars a month for the basics. The hardware and service you use will depend on where you want to listen and what you want to listen to.

Portable Satellite Radio Buying Guide
Now, imagine yourself on a road trip, and you are able to listen to digital music on any one of well over 100 stations across the entire continent. No static, one station of your choice, 24/7 wherever you are. Currently, XM and Sirius are the two companies pulling this off. Both satellite radio providers have a huge variety of music channels, sports, talk and news, including feeds from CNN and Fox. The two companies are currently completely independent of each other; if you have an XM receiver, you cannot listen to Sirius stations. Also, manufacturers are aligned with one or the other. If you buy a Panasonic satellite receiver, it will only carry Sirius. Kenwood, Clarion, and Jensen also supply Sirius, while Pioneer, Alpine, and Sony supply XM. Both companies have websites where you can listen to the program lineup each offer--this is the deciding factor for many people....

Unlike commercial radio, satellite radio relies on orbiting satellites to transmit signals. From thousands of miles away, these satellites send their signals down to radio receivers on the ground. Also unlike commercial radio, satellite radio isn’t free. You subscribe through a service provider (XM or Sirius) and pay a monthly subscription fee. In addition, you need to have some hardware—most importantly, a satellite radio receiver—which allows you to listen in your home, car, or on the go. Make sure that any equipment you buy is compatible with your provider. XM receivers, such as the MyFi, will only work for XM subscribers, while Sirius receivers, such as its Sportster, will only work for Sirius users.
