Note that I am price sensitive (thus the A540...Maybe my A540 can take close up shots and I just need to make a manual camera adjustment...That should put a good dent in my one million questions...

I searched the web and nikon has good ability to shot well but eats cells quickly and some people claims lens' are broken in time without any reason...For me the main thiings are good at optic zoom and dark places...Based on that I prefer the A540...Also, I've read too many user reviews of the L1 saying the photo quality wasn't good...

Just below the red stars there is a link that takes you to "owner's opinions...There are few differences in these two cameras other than the obvious one that the A700 has 6X zoom and the A540 has 4X zoom...It would have been nice to hear from A700/A540 users (ahem) but I may just have to learn for myself...

I am A540 user for last 2 months...I found that it does well when shooting close up portraits from about 4 or 5 feet away, or when shooting small group shots in mid sized rooms...A540 is compatible with the optional High-Power Flash HF-DC1, which can deliver proper illumination up to approximately 30 feet...
