Looks like the Canon MD101 (North America equivalent of the ZR800) is about as close as I can get...Note that the MD101 and ZR800 do not have manual audio level controls - for your stated use this should not be an issue...I have now purchased a Canon MD101...I have made a test clip and burned it to DVD, and what do you know the picture is not bad at all...

It's a shame that so many people are turning to HD camcorders, as most can't compare with the footage quality of miniDV camcorders like this...This camcorder is so simple to use and connects instantly to a computer to download...I've used my canon md101 for over a year now and am delighted with it...

A Canon MD101 Camcorder Review - I hadn't read a bad review about this camera so I purchased one for my daughter who uses a Canon S3 for wildlife photography and fancied a crack at video...There's no USB connection but there is firewire, which is good enough if you are downloading for editing...
