Both Sony DSC-H50 and Canon SX10 are great super-zoom cameras, but Canon SX10 has slightly better wide (28mm) than Sony DSC-H50 (31mm), and should also give You less noise in high ISO shots...but the Sony DSC-H50 is $70 cheaper, it's allowed to perform slightly worse than Canon SX10...One camera in this class I can recommend with first hand experience is...

On the downside, you'll have to do without HD video recording or RAW still shots and, while the overall ease of use is improved compared to the S5, those moving up from a point-and-shoot will still face a bit of a learning curve...An SLR with just one modest lens is a lot more to lug around (let alone the huge lens necessary to match the SX10...

The lens hunts for focus a bit in low light, but overall the camera is fantastic...So the lower funky fasciated twig, is the tweaky growth you see in the top image, which is the upper 1/3 or so, of a 28' tall stree tree...

My hunch is that this is the case with the SI 20 as well...As an all around compromise camera, this is a good value...This is a really good compromise camera for someone wishing to avoid the bottomless cost of and SLR, along with the additional weight...

I am a bit undecided between Canon SX10 IS and S5 IS...Looking at those images I felt that barrel distortion at near and far ends of the lens usage is more pronounced...I just ordered the SX10 after reading many user comments on DPreview and several user reviews on Amazon...I haven't seen any good deals on the S5 since the newer camera came out...
