Yes, it can, and often does run without the fan...Bulid quality is pretty good, and the magnesium chassis is quite a work of art...It's harder to control temps on Core Duo equipped laptops than P-M's because the former don't allow undervolting to the same extent...

If everything is priced right and it's good performance I would totally get one...Too bad the battery lasts 1 month past its warranty and is very expensive to replace...too bad the upgrade cycle around here takes years...

I have a D630 that I absolutely love...The GPU is soldered onto the mainboard on the D630 (and D830 too), there's no way to upgrade unfortunately...

The cpukHz setting was recommended by a VMware Knowledge Base entry because the laptop processor reported a different speed to VMware than what VMware expected...I had a bluetooth USB device not recognised in the host (device manager showing yellow exclamation marks...The first setting I tried greatly reduced my VMware guest startup time, but did not resolve the issue with the shutdown time...
