I was given a Compaq Proliant 6500R and a Proliant 7000...HP and Compaq seem to have nothing useful...You will have to end up getting a SmartStart CD (7.6 or earlier) to manipulate boot controllers with the lack of the diags partition...
I have an HP6500 series machine that has a S50 monitor...My problem is everything on my screen is larger than I want...I had to get a audio/modem driver, because 2000 would not recognize my modem/sound card...Also, on the back of this computer should be the exact model number other than 6500...
The other dell and the HP u have listed are pretty bland looking laptops, i've never been a fan of HP's plastic laptops...If portability is at all a concern for you, I'd definitely recommend the M1330...now here's some shots of sony's SZ line which has the metal palm rests, wedge shape, led backlit display, barrel type hinge, and even right down to the chrome markings...
