From my experience with the JBL L series and as another member said a very good amp with more than adequate CLEAN power is the ticket to sonic bliss...Replace them with good gold or nickel plate 5-way binding posts at a minimum...That's a JBL I can recommend without reservation...
Have a pair of JBLL112's I bought new at the end of 1983 and am considering selling on ebay...Got some good input and the general opinion was to let the buyer do it or possibly offer the buyer the option...I'm sure opinions will vary but, I'd now like to get an idea for the value of these 112's so I can set the reserve correctly when I list them...
As long as you don't drive it into clipping or distortion, you should be good...FWIW, I drive the L112 pair currently in daily use in my office with a pair of 360WPC bridged Rotel RB-980BX amps that rarely see more than a few watts, but I can blow out a candle 6 feet away at my desk when pushed hard...I drove my original set, now doing backup duty, with a Yamaha M-4 120WPC for 20 years...
When I moved into my high school classroom a few years ago there was a pair of L112 speakers on a shelf...So if I do drop new drivers in, what should I look for in my replacements, and could anybody recommend some inexpensive replacements...
