The 500 is almost the same player as you have with some minor improvements...AFAIK, the only things that BDP-S500 have are IR remote support, and I believe it passes the newer HD audio formats via HDMI to a capable receiver...Since you have been around the site for awhile I am guess you know both the up and down sides to the PS3...

Before we start in, and it's neither here or there, but didn't Sony notice that "S500" is the most common consumer electronics model name around...That aside, we can find little about this new player that differs from the BDP-S300: both feature HDMI (duh), 24p, and x.v.Color, and Dolby Digital Plus -- only the S500 has Dolby True HD and DTS-HD1, and HDMI...

I have a Sony DAV S500 DVD player with 5.1 surround sound and a Blu-ray S550...I have tried both these but the sound still does not feed from the Blu-ray to the DVD player...Have you selected VIDEO 2 on the DAV-S500...If you are selecting Video 2 then it is entirely possible the BluRay player output is set to a format the DAV-S500 can't handle...

The ES ads to that a heavier chassis and separate boards...Samsung having the only player capable of passing through the bitstream and it being the cheapest of the bunch makes me wonder why anyone would buy anything else...So far I am not so impressed as the Samsung LNT5271F mated with the BDP-1400 still produces the best picture I have seen so far and the Samsung has the added benefit of DTS-HD...
