I bought a sony717 a few weeks ago and am testing it with 30 day return privileges...Sony has a good repair record in consumer reports too...Here is what i've found as i compare it to the sony717...I've blown up photos to 11x14 and they look pretty good...

The 7i/hi, the 5700, the 7x7 are all fantastic cameras, and the quality of pics that they can produce is simply breathtaking...not good enough use the 4x magnification and manual focus the...ability to focus well in low light situations and get good shots...The 7i in particular has some neat features when you are perusing...

choice is the 717, but it isn't firm yet...I and many others have switched from the 5700 to the 717 and can't be happier...Until 5700 comes up with a fix the 717 is ahead...We have to meet someday - what you described about your situation almost mirrors my own...
