I just bought a Sony RM-VL600 Universal Learning remote with hopes of using it to run my H.T...Honestly I didn't expect to receive any info at all, much less 8 minutes after my post...I've tried the "learn any code" function which is just pressing the + or - channel button and then trying to power on the device you are trying to program while in the -set- function...

I wouldn't go as far as to say you "can do pretty much the same" with a RM-VL600 as a 550...The RM-VL600 is an excellent starter remote because of its learning capabilities and macro buttons but it will never have the same WAF as a 550 nor do as much...
