I am very impressed with the Toshiba DR-1 DVD Recorder...I have a good friend who has a Panasonic E50 and it also is nice but, does not have the functionality or options that the DR-1 does...I would recommend this as a solid purchase...

The recorders remote is good, but could be better...Near the bottom of the range (1.4 Mbps), the picture quality becomes pretty bad...You can see occasional artifact in this mode if you make a copy from the DV input and feed a very complex scene from a good digital camcorder...

I still have 20 days left on my return slip...All of the Good Guys were out of stock for the holidays...Looks good and has user friendly menus but is very slow to edit unwanted video images and to load Toshiba DVD Ram discs...

This code is the Nec format Device-69, Sub-Device-188, Command 18...Their DVD players are sub- device 186 for reference...I had also thought of the workaround you mention, but it comes unstuck when there is no disk in the tray...

It appears merely as the result of an R/RW writing error caused on bad media...That problem aside, it is hard to fault the Toshiba DR1...Using the RAM timeslip feature is excellent and in operation the DR1 looks very pretty with all 5 of it's different coloured LEDs illuminated (owners will know what I mean...Oh well, I returned the unit to "The Good Guys" to exchange for another...
