My XS32 and XS54 do the same thing...So, it's a good idea to burn anything you'd hate to lose to DVD...All hard drives eventually fail, and some folks here have been burnt by a bad HDD in their DVDR...

After that, your dvd's will play in most if not all recorders/players...When this is turned off the recorder records in the 'dv-video' mode, which is different in some ways to regular 'dvd-VIDEO' mode...BTW, the finalized disc will play in a Panasonic DVR unit (with HDD), but not in a Panasonic standalone (don't remember the model number...
